Waveshare GPM 280

Ahh yes, another handheld from Waveshare. I’ve had hits and misses with this company and decided to plunge deep into my pockets and grab the “gameboy micro” clone-powered by a CM3+

Ouch! the price that was just that $160 with tax a little more. Way too much money for this handheld……or…..is there something special about it that i’m not seeing?

in this blog post, lets take a deeper dive into the handheld and give it a closer gander.

GPM 280 waveshare

There are some pros and cons with this device, so I’ll start with the Pros:

its small - but not as small as the gameboy micro. it’s actually close to the size of the RG350 or the pocket go v2 (I actually wanted the gameboy micro size :/ )

The unit is still small enough to be on travel, fits in pockets with ease and it operates off of a cm3+ which is perfect for all ones, gba and even some arcade ports.

The screen resolution is noticeable with playing and even compared it with other units and clearly can see the differences between different screens and units.

The CONS:

The battery life for this unit is 1 hour from full charge to full drain - not ideal for a portable. The only way to use this unit on the go is to make sure you have a usb battery back up to make sure you have more playing time than it’s capable of doing at this time. It’s uncertain why the battery drains so fast with this unit.

It gets very hot and very fast. Even though it has ventilation on the back and sides, this unit still runs warm on the hands and this might cause some discomfort as it did with me. Not a good thing either.

cost - I paid (out of pocket with all my handhelds) $160 for this kit (yes it comes as a kit) you can buy just the HAT for less and add your own cm3+ but I had mine already assembled with the pi included.

No games are on this device, you will need to program and add games to it your self and it HAS TO BE CONNECTED TO WIFI in order for you to add any games to this unit. I also want to mention forget using programs like paragon and or a pi unit running a linux based OS to add games because for some strange reason, the copy of Recalbox for this image the files are “Read Only” and thus making it impossible for me to add games by pc and not by wifi.

Build quality: it’s okay but not $160 worth of build. It has nice features and makes it very pretty, the screen is fantastic and it’s one of the best screens I have yet seen. The buttons on the other hand are not the best. I noticed lots of lag on the A and B buttons more often than I liked. The d-pad is mushy so if your not into the mushy feeling d-pad then this unit isn’t for you.

I am slightly disappointed with this device. I thought it was going to be smaller and have more options as hot keys to play some of the higer bit games but it lacks any way (at this time of this writing) to play n64 games as it can indeed run these games but there is no controls config yet and I have to stay limited for now until someone can create a much better image for this device.

My score for this device is a 6-out of 10 because of the issues I had to fix -

That’s it for now!
